Sage Recovery & Wellness Center offers treatment in Austin, TX, through an intensive outpatient program for teens struggling with mental health disorders, providing them with effective treatment and support.
When our founder, a respected Austin clinician, opened Sage Recovery & Wellness Center, the clinical community celebrated the inclusion of teen services, recognizing a critical need for high-quality treatment for adolescents in the region.
Our adolescent intensive outpatient program (IOP) prides itself on filling that gap. We combine quality treatment with a high-caliber team to support high school-aged teens who are struggling with severe depression, anxiety, behavioral health, and other mental health symptoms. The program leans heavily on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) interventions focusing on coping skills, distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and family involvement.
These issues affect the entire family. We strongly encourage parents and/or legal guardians to participate in at least 4 family therapy sessions during the 9-week program to support the healing process. Additionally, during the weekly multi-family group, parents and adolescents come together to discuss special topics and review skills the adolescents have been learning to be able to further support and coach their child in self-management.
Sage Recovery & Wellness Center combines holistic care with evidence-based treatments to support clients in managing mental health issues. Our world-class treatment center is ideal for those looking for lasting recovery and wellness.
Trauma-Informed Care
We prioritize trauma-informed care, recognizing that many clients have experienced past traumas that profoundly affect their mental health and overall wellness. Our therapeutic environment fosters safety, trust, and empowerment, helping clients heal from their pasts while focusing on their future.
Evidence-Based and Holistic Treatments
Our programs are focused around evidence-based therapies such as: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and more. By blending more traditional treatments with holistic therapies like mindfulness, yoga, sound healing, Reiki, and more, we can help clients find a sense of calm and clarity during their healing process.
Personalized Treatment Planning
Treatment plans are individualized and adjusted over time, ensuring the right level of support throughout recovery.
School-Friendly Scheduling
In adolescent IOP, we offer flexible scheduling to help teens stay on track in school. During treatment, teens also gain emotional support and life skills that improve their mental health after treatment.
Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a specialized mental health treatment approach tailored to meet the unique emotional and behavioral needs of adolescents. This program offers structured therapy and support several days a week, as an after-school program, so teens can maintain their regular routines while receiving focused mental health care.
IOP treatment plans for teens at Sage Recovery & Wellness Center are individualized to address each teen’s unique mental health needs. We believe that mental health programs are effective when they are specifically designed with the individual in mind. Therefore, our treatment team works together to integrate treatment modalities that are effective in helping each teen heal from their mental health challenges.
Providers and clinicians are the foundation of our program at Sage Recovery & Wellness Center. Our team of clinicians works seamlessly together to provide the highest level of care for every teen. Every member of our team is highly educated and experienced, allowing teens access to top-of-the-line care in every aspect of treatment.
We offer a range of evidence-based treatment options for teens in IOP. While the program relies heavily on DBT, a teen’s individualized treatment program incorporates outpatient services into their treatment plan that aid in their recovery. Every teen is assessed prior to entering the program, and evidence-based treatments are utilized together in a cohesive treatment program.
Our teen IOP programs usually involve a combination of individual therapy, group therapy, family counseling, and skill-building sessions. At our center, adolescents attend sessions 3-4 times per week for an average of 9 weeks, learning valuable skills in emotional regulation, mindfulness, and communication, based on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). The goal is to help teens better manage their symptoms while strengthening their relationships at home and school.
At Sage Recovery & Wellness Center, our teen IOP program is an after-school program. It is highly structured and incorporates multiple treatment modalities and approaches to keep the program engaging for young minds. Our curriculum helps teach adolescents the necessary skills to manage and maintain their mental wellness. Teens attend multiple treatment sessions based on their individualized treatment plan. Additionally, family members are encouraged to participate each week in the family program, as we offer support for teens and their loved ones.
In our teen IOP programs, we utilize DBT techniques that help to improve mental health. This occurs primarily through the development of coping skills, effective communication, and emotional regulation. Our structured treatment program provides teens with skill-building and support that address their unique needs regarding the specific coping skills that are helpful for them to maintain their mental health.
Our teen IOP programs offer in-person therapy sessions as part of a teen’s structured treatment plan. Teens work with a provider in sessions to improve their problem-solving and coping skills. Through in-person therapy sessions, teens learn to manage their mental health in daily life, providing them with skills that will have a lasting impact.
If you are looking for a flexible care option, outpatient care may be the right fit for your teen. Contact our admissions team today to learn more about our outpatient programs and whether they are a good fit for your loved one.
At Sage Recovery & Wellness Center, we address mental health conditions in teens. It is not uncommon for adolescents to struggle with their mental health while they navigate this developmental stage in their lives. Getting treatment at a young age helps protect teens from future challenges with their mental health.
The mental health conditions that we treat include:
Treatment at Sage Recovery & Wellness Center offers a unique combination of evidence-based treatments with a holistic approach. We believe that each teen’s individual treatment plan should incorporate tools with the highest probability of addressing their needs. Therefore, we incorporate the following treatment modalities:
With mental health crises in teens continuing to be on the rise, Sage Recovery & Wellness Center strongly encourages parents and loved ones to take a proactive approach to treatment when symptoms start to become apparent. A teen’s mental health needs vary as they develop, but when they are prioritized, teens learn skills that will help them be more successful in their teen years and as adults. We believe that mental health treatment for teens is a way to provide them with the skills they need to be successful in their professional and personal lives as adults.
Treatment plans in our teen IOP programs incorporate family relationships and skill-building through family therapy and the multi-family groups. Family therapy serves an important role in adolescent IOP. It helps heal relationships in the home while teaching skills to teens and other family members. Through collaborative care with the teen’s primary support system, interventions in teen IOP reduce self-harm and improve skills not just for the teen, but for the whole family, which will support their mental health.
Once a teen has connected with the Sage Recovery & Wellness team, they are a part of the Sage community. While in treatment, a case manager will connect the family with recommended providers who will be beneficial for ongoing support for the adolescent. Once they become part of our alumni community, our team is available to continue providing additional resources to help the family and the adolescent continue to be successful.
At Sage Recovery & Wellness Center, our teen IOP programs are ideal for teens who would benefit from structured support and treatment for their mental health. IOP programs allow teens to participate in daily life, attending school and other activities, while going through a structured treatment program. Teens who are struggling with their mental health and are unable to cope with the challenges of daily life would benefit from IOP.
A residential treatment program or a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers more support and structure when compared to IOP. Transitioning from residential treatment or PHP allows teens to slowly become more engaged in life outside of treatment while maintaining a high level of structure and support.
By transitioning from residential treatment or PHP to IOP, teens learn how to manage their mental health, receiving support when they meet challenges that allow clinicians to teach them or reinforce the skills they have learned as the challenges arise at home or at school. This approach and step-down process help keep the teen progressing forward instead of sliding backward in the progress that they made in higher levels of care.
Sometimes, a higher level of care than what can be provided in an IOP is needed. While IOP offers a high level of structure and support, sometimes the frequency, duration, and intensity of the teen’s symptoms indicate that a higher level of care, such as a psychiatric hospital or residential treatment center, is necessary to ensure that the teen can keep themselves safe at school and at home.
At Sage Recovery & Wellness Center, we offer support that addresses the needs of every teen. If it is determined during the initial phone call, during the assessment, or throughout their participation in IOP that the teen needs a higher level of care, our team will speak with the family and provide recommendations for places that will meet their current needs.
Our team will assist the family throughout the referral process to ensure the receiving program has the information necessary to make the transition process to their program as smoothly as possible. When the teen has completed their program, we will assist with the transition back so the family can resume care at the IOP level.

Through adolescent IOP, teens and their families receive intensive support when the teen needs it the most. IOP is a structured program that teaches skills that are not just important as a teen, but to have as they navigate life as an adult, such as emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and effective communication. Our IOP program helps provide the necessary support to address the teen’s current mental health challenges while equipping them with skills that will be helpful for a lifetime.
IOP offers less structure and support compared to PHP or residential treatment. PHP programs allow the adolescent to sleep at home while attending programming and school a majority of the day, 5-7 days per week. Residential programs offer 24-hour care until they are stable enough to return home. IOP allows teens to attend their regular school and activities while participating in clinical programming in the evenings, a few evenings per week. Therefore, IOP is ideal for teens who require mental health treatment without needing as much structure and support as those offered in PHP or residential treatment.
If a teen enters IOP and needs a higher level of care, the team at Sage Recovery & Wellness Center will make recommendations and assist in the referral process. Our number one priority is your teen’s safety. While we do not offer residential treatment or PHP for teens, we stay well-informed of the other treatment options available and will make recommendations based on what may be the best fit for your family’s needs.
Outpatient treatment supports long-term recovery by helping teens build skills to support their mental health. In outpatient treatment, teens attend school and activities while receiving treatment. As such, they can work through challenges that occur, building skills to manage their mental health and behavior. These skills benefit them in the short term, helping them heal relationships and be more engaged in their education. They also impact their lives into adulthood, teaching them skills they can use to improve their mental health long-term.
