Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Complex Young People

Presented by Ginny Fullerton, Ph.D.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous and potentially debilitating problem that may co-occur with a number of other problems, including depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Factors such as social stigma, lack of awareness, and shame may hinder disclosure and identification of OCD, particularly when care is initially sought for another presenting problem. However, if identified and addressed, there is a high potential for symptom relief. Treatment outcome research consistently supports the effectiveness of exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or a combination of CBT and medication to treat OCD across ages and clinical presentations. This talk will begin with an overview of OCD symptom subtypes, neurological correlates, and co-morbid conditions. Essential ingredients of CBT for OCD will be discussed, including exposure and response prevention (E/RP), restructuring common faulty beliefs, and mindfulness. Finally, the presentation will offer considerations in the treatment of OCD with a comorbid substance use disorder, including tips for identifying and reducing commonly seen complicating factors.
