In addition to Dual Diagnosis Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) groups, Sage Recovery & Wellness Center is now offering a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) IOP for Substance Abuse and/or Mental Health. Our programs are continually evolving, based on client need and input. We saw a number of clients seeking treatment for substance use issues, coupled with emotional instability due to lack of self-regulation skills and chaotic interpersonal relationships, evidencing need for an individualized treatment approach, arriving in the form of a DBT IOP group.

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

DBT is a skill-based therapeutic method, derived from the cognitive behavioral model. DBT emerged in the 1980’s through Marsha Linehan’s work with client’s living with borderline personality disorder and chronic suicidality. Since then, DBT has become the gold standard as an evidence-based intervention for borderline personality disorder and self-harming behaviors, and has proved efficacious for several other mental health issues, including substance use disorders, depression, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

DBT works to improve maladaptive behavioral patterns through the acquisition and utilization of concrete coping skills. The framework functions under the assumption that individuals are doing the best that they can with their given abilities. The attainment of new skills or coping strategies often results in improved outcomes, both personally and interpersonally. The power to change unhelpful behaviors comes through the use of skills.

There are four skills modules in the DBT curriculum: Mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation. Sage is utilizing a DBT curriculum developed specifically for individuals who are struggling with substance use and/or other mental health issues. We can help our clients with individual & group DBT therapy in addition to supporting our client’s families with family and couples counseling.

Who could benefit from the DBT IOP?

Individuals with a substance use disorder, who also find themselves struggling with any of the issues listed below, may find the DBT IOP a realistic and beneficial therapeutic approach.

Call 512-306-1394 to schedule a NO COST one and a half hour assessment with a master level licensed clinician to see if DBT could be the perfect fit for you or a loved one.
