Finding Things to Celebrate in May

A very important part of the recovery journey is learning to change your mindset and foster a more positive perspective. While this isn’t always easy, it can come more naturally when you make an effort to search for the good in the everyday. Celebrating even the smaller observances and lesser-known holidays of each month can give you something to look forward to while boosting your mental health. Meanwhile, many things are coming up that you can celebrate in May.

For many people, May is a pretty busy month. School years are coming to an end and a lot of graduations and other celebrations are taking place. Maybe this is one of your favorite times of the year, or maybe you’re already feeling overwhelmed with how much is coming up. No matter what you have going on, make sure to take even just a little bit of time throughout each week to celebrate the small joys of life.

At Sage Recovery, we believe that a positive mindset can play a major role in living a healthier, happier life. It can also help to prevent relapse. These are just a few exciting things worth celebrating this month.

Celebrate in May: National Fitness Day (5/4)

National Fitness Day is coming up on May 4th. Health and fitness play a very important role in recovery from addiction. Regular exercise is associated with a multitude of both mental and physical health benefits. It can help you to better deal with stress and reduce symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.

Maybe you haven’t been making your physical fitness a priority lately. Similarly, maybe you just haven’t found a type of exercise that’s a good fit for you. Consider celebrating National Fitness Day by trying out a form of exercise you’ve never done before. You could take a spin class, learn how to practice yoga, or try out a sport you’ve always wanted to learn.

Celebrate in May: Cinco de Mayo (5/5)

Cinco De Mayo is a special day that celebrates Mexico’s triumph over the French on May 5th, 1862. Now, many people use it as a day to celebrate the history and culture of the people of Mexico. Maybe you’ve celebrated this day in the past but didn’t really know what it was all about. This year, consider learning more about the background of Cinco de Mayo and celebrate it in a way that honors its tradition.

You could do this by supporting local Mexican-owned businesses and restaurants. Some cities also host parades complete with traditional Mexican music like Mariachi, salsa, and Latin.

Celebrate in May: National Teacher’s Day (5/7)

We all know that among the different types of professions that often don’t get the acknowledgment they deserve, teachers are high on that list. Teachers are often underpaid and overworked. Not only do they often have to spend hours outside of school trying to keep up but many often spend their own money to purchase supplies for their classrooms. National Teacher’s Day is coming up on May the 7th, just as most school years are starting to wrap up.

If you have children who are in school, consider acknowledging this day by doing something special for your child’s teacher. Maybe this could be asking them if they have anything on their classroom wishlist that they could use. Gifting them something from this list guarantees that it’s something that is actually needed and will get used. It also shows that you are aware of their hard work and appreciate them.

Celebrate in May: Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day (5/16)

May 16th is National Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day. An act of kindness from a neighbor, especially when it is not expected, can really make a huge difference. This year, consider going out of your way to show kindness to someone in your community. Maybe you will do something good for a new mom who just had a baby, an older couple experiencing some health problems, or a family who recently lost a loved one.

Dropping off a kind note, a meal, or even offering to help with things like yard work or taking out the trash could make a huge difference. At Sage Recovery, we recognize that giving back to the community is an important part of the recovery process. It can provide an incredible sense of fulfillment and meaning to your life.

Celebrate in May: National Dog Rescue Day (5/20)

National Dog Rescue Day is May 20th. If you’ve ever fostered or adopted a rescue dog before, you know how rewarding and life-changing it can be. Maybe you’re looking to add a new pet to your family but haven’t considered the possibility of adopting before. Consider visiting your local humane society and giving a home to one of the many, many shelter pets that are desperate for a family.

While not ever day in your recovery journey may be good, there is something good to be found everyday. The more you make it a habit to look for these things, the more you will begin to notice them naturally. This type of mindset can be incredibly beneficial for your overall mental health and can help you to avoid relapse. If you’re ready to start living the live you truly deserve while finding freedom from addiction, our team at Sage Recovery can help.
