How to Explain Therapy and Mental Health to My Parents

Why Families Choose Our Programs

Sage Recovery & Wellness Center is the go-to treatment center for peers in the industry and their loved ones. We combine holistic care with evidence-based treatments to help clients manage mental health issues. Our world-class treatment center is ideal for clients looking for lasting recovery.

Trauma-Informed Care

We prioritize trauma-informed care, recognizing that many clients have experienced past traumas that profoundly affect their mental health and overall wellness. Our therapeutic environment fosters safety, trust, and empowerment, helping clients heal from their pasts while focusing on their future.

Evidence-Based and Holistic Treatments

Our programs are focused on evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and more. By blending more traditional treatments with holistic therapies like mindfulness, yoga, sound healing, Reiki, and more, we can help clients find a sense of calm and clarity during their healing process.

Personalized Treatment Planning

Treatment plans are individualized and adjusted over time, ensuring the right level of support throughout recovery.

School-Friendly Scheduling

In adolescent IOP, we offer flexible scheduling to help teens stay on track in school. During treatment, teens also gain emotional support and life skills that improve their mental health after treatment.

Key Components of Individual Therapy for Adolescents

Effective individual therapy for adolescents includes expert providers, an individualized treatment program, and integration of treatment options that address challenges successfully.

Licensed, Specialized Teen Therapists

Our highly qualified team of experts includes master-level therapists who specialize in effective care for teens. The treatment team works as a cohesive unit. While one therapist may be working directly with you and your family, the entire team meets and lends their expertise in frequent clinical team meetings.

Individualized, Developmentally Appropriate Care

We provide individualized treatment programs for every teen, not a one-size-fits-all approach. Additionally, our treatment protocols are developmentally appropriate to ensure effective outcomes.

Integration With Family Systems and Support

Teens’ mental health challenges impact the entire family, and family systems impact their recovery process. Family therapy and parent support help address relationship dynamics that may impact a teen’s mental health.

Evidence-Based, Trauma-Informed Approach

We provide evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), that help teens build new skills for improved wellness. We also understand the impact of trauma and utilize a trauma-informed approach to care.

Coordination With Higher Levels of Care When Needed

For teens who require a higher level of care, we provide ethical referrals to trusted treatment centers. We also offer a continuum of care, including teen IOP, that provides a higher level of structure and support.

Flexible Outpatient Scheduling for High School Students

High school students require a flexible therapy schedule that accounts for their needs outside of sessions. We understand this need for flexibility and offer flexible scheduling to ensure easy access to care.

One-on-One Therapy Sessions With a Licensed Clinician

Individual therapy with a teen therapist offers adolescents a high level of support and care. Through therapy sessions, we provide teens with non-judgmental support for their unique challenges.

Building Self-Awareness, Self-Esteem, and Emotional Insight

Individual therapy offers teens a safe space to explore their inner landscape. We encourage teens to build self-awareness by helping them learn more about patterns that are both beneficial and detrimental. Additionally, we help teens build self-esteem, supporting them as they learn to trust themselves to handle challenges.

Development of Coping Skills and Coping Strategies

Adolescents commonly struggle with emotional regulation and stress, both at home and in school. Teens are also in the process of learning how to engage in peer, family, school, and sometimes work relationships.

Support for Long-Term Mental Health and Well-Being

Teens with mental health challenges are at a higher risk of mental health issues as adults. Through individual therapy, we support long-term mental health by helping teens build skills to manage their well-being, such as stress management. Teens carry these skills into adulthood, increasing their success both personally and professionally as they grow into young adults.

What to Expect During Teen Therapy Sessions

Therapy sessions are focused on helping teens address their unique challenges. We offer a clear path to recovery through assessment, goal setting, and tracking that helps take the guesswork out of mental health treatment for teens.

The First Session: Assessment and Goal Setting

In the first session, we focus on assessment and goal setting. Assessment allows a therapist the opportunity to learn more about a teen’s challenges. Goal setting creates a framework for treatment and helps teens and clinicians work together.

Creating an Individualized Treatment Plan

We believe that effective care is individualized, and using information from the first session, we create a treatment plan for each teen. Throughout treatment, we track goals and progress, making adjustments as needed. We believe in measurable goals that help providers, teens, and their families clearly see the changes occurring as a result of therapy.

Ongoing Therapy Sessions and Progress Tracking

Every teen’s individualized plan relies on consistency and accountability. We provide ongoing progress tracking and ensure consistency through accountability measures.

Collaboration With Parents and Caregivers

Through family therapy and family programs, we offer collaboration with parents and caregivers. Every teen’s needs are unique, and we encourage family involvement in ways that effectively support teens’ lasting recovery.

Our approach to treatment is focused on effective long-term outcomes. We offer a highly individualized and integrative approach grounded in evidence-based care designed to support long-term emotional wellness.

When to Consider Therapy for Your Teen

As a parent, it is difficult to watch your teen struggle with their mental health. Recognizing the signs of mental health challenges helps improve long-term outcomes.

Difficulty Managing Emotions or Stress

As teens develop mental health issues, they commonly show a decrease in their ability to cope with stress or emotional distress. This may be seen through frequent mood outbursts, intense irritability, social withdrawal, or falling grades.

Withdrawal, Isolation, or Relationship Struggles

Withdrawal, isolation, and relationship struggles in teens are critical indicators of underlying mental health issues. These behaviors often manifest as increased irritability or abandonment of hobbies and school.

Changes in Mood, Behavior, or Academic
Performance

Teens struggling with mental health often display significant changes in mood (persistent sadness, irritability), behavior (social withdrawal, substance use, low energy), and academic performance (falling grades, lack of focus, school avoidance).

Navigating Life Transitions or Ongoing Mental Health Challenges

Recognizing the warning signs of mental health challenges in your teen empowers you to help them navigate the transition into adulthood. Your support and early treatment help them build important skills for long-term wellness.
